Above section meets with Hist E336
How are East African communities organized and how have they changed over
the course of the last 2000 years? What impact did European colonialism
have on these societies? How have East African societies responded to
crises such as the AIDS epidemic and ethnic genocide in Rwanda? We explore
these questions and others as we read texts, watch documentary films and
discuss the features of the East African past.
No prerequisites. Students take three exams with the possibility of
writing a paper in place of one of the exams. Graduate students attend the
lectures for E336, participate in group tutorials, and write two essays.
