Topic: Rome in the Middle Ages
A portion of the above section reserved for majors

Rome in the Middle Ages was many things; the seat of the papacy, a
relatively large urban concentration of
people, a focus of pilgrimage, the former capital of the Roman empire. One
can study its monuments, its
topography, its social and political history, and the history of its
symbolic meaning. This class will serve as
an introduction to these various aspects of medieval Rome, through
readings in both primary and secondary
literature, and consideration of the monuments and archaeology of the
medieval city. Course requirements
will include two or three short class presentations, and a paper
(12-15pp).
