This course will consider the social, political, economic and demographic
factors which contributed to
Europe's rise to world hegemony. We shall start by exploring European
society prior to this emergence
and then explore the subsequent processes of agricultural, scientific and
industrial revolution; and of
demographic and urban expansion. We shall study these processes as they
developed within Europe, but
also outside of it in the form of exploration and imperial colonization.

Students will be responsible for completing the common course readings,
participating in class discussions,
writing two 5-10 page book reviews and one c.20 page final paper on a
topic which is derived from the
course readings but incorporates additional outside reading. The last few
weeks of the course will be
devoted to researching and writing this final paper and reviewing drafts
in class with the other students.
