Topic: The Nation and Beyond: Readings in the History and Practice of
History
A portion of the above section reserved for majors.

History developed as a modern discipline in the 19th and 20th centuries to
advance the nation state. What are the implications for history's themes,
narratives, and audiences from challenges to the nation state over the
past generation? We will consider the lenses, methods, and sources that
historians have developed to look at the past, on the one hand, and the
development and experiences they have chosen to look at and ignore, on the
other. We will compare various patterns and uses of historymaking, from
professional and academic to personal and amateur.
