This course explores the dissemination and reception of forms of American
mass culture in Europe, with a particular focus on the post-World War II
period. The course will explore the various media of cultural
transmission, as well as the ways in which Europeans responded to the
influx of American culture, through established high-brow discourse, going
back in time to the last century, but also at the more vernacular levels
where European audiences made American culture work for their own cultural
needs in their own specific social and cultural settings.
