Honors | Comparative Literature
C251 | 1205 | Hertz

This course is a survey of popular songs of Europe and the Americas,
including modern ballads, country western, rock, French cabaret songs,
Spanish flamencos, Mexican rancheras, Argentine tangos, and Neapolitan
melodies.
We'll discuss the literary qualities of lyrics in the context of musical
settings and performance as well as reading them independently as
literature. We'll have some discussion of musical stylistics as well.
There will be live performance of selected works; no previous courses in
music or poetry are required.
The Honors section of C251 will feature a series of special events:
lectures, discussions, performances, as well as visits to library archives
and museums. Honors Division students also need to enroll in the Honors
Discussion H299 section 0031.
