CLASS MEETING:
Two 50 minute periods per week

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Designed for the student with little or no experience or formal training in
modern dance.  This course focuses on the essentials of body alignment,
modern dance history and technique, movement mechanics,improvisation, and
composition.

COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE:
1.  Modern dance as an art form
2.  Axial/Locomotor movement fundamentals
3.  Effort/Shape concepts
4.  Movement analysis/mechanics
5.  Dance terminology
6.  Modern dance history
7.  Dance improvisation
8.  Dance composition
9.  Dance films
10. Concert criticism

EXAMS:
One written exam
Three performance exams

ASSIGNMENTS:
One performance critique
"Trailblazers..." film research paper

ATTENDANCE:
Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences.  Upon a fourth
absence, the student has three (3) options:
1)  receive a grade of F;
2)  officially withdraw from the class;
3)  follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective
Program
Coordinator.

GRADING POLICY:
Class Participation  =  90 pts.
Written Exams  =  65 pts.
Performance Exams @ 25 pts.  =  75 pts.
Performance critique  =  10 pts.
Film research paper  =  20 pts.
TOTAL COURSE POINTS  =  260 pts.
