Readings:
Description: In the first part of this seminar with the patterns and analyses of vowel harmony by carefully reading and discussing Archangeli and Pulleyblank (1994). We will extend their analysis to other types of harmony, such as nasal harmony and retraction harmony (i.e. pharyngeali- zation) as in Arabic. In the second part of the course we will examine harmony processes through the perspective of optimality theory. Course requirements tentatively include student presentations of the readings, several homework assignments in which students are to write up phonological analyses of harmony data, and a term paper.
