This course will deal with statistical and mathematical techniques that
are relevant to journalism. The topics in statistics will include
probability, the normal distribution, hypothesis-testing, and polls,
surveys and sampling methods. We will also cover descriptive statistics,
with a focus on the graphical presentation of data. Mathematical topics
will include rates of change and mathematical modeling, as well as a
review of the more basic procedures commonly encountered in reporting.
The course will include written assignments involving the interpretation
and explanation of data and data analysis. Computer laboratory work will
be included, providing experience with Excel to work with large sets of
data. Prerequisite: M118 or consent of instructor.
