	This course is an introduction to the government and politics of
Latin America.  It begins with an overview of the geography and history of
the region before examining why democratic government has had a tenuous
existence in this area.  It also discusses the nature of presidentialism,
both to assess its role in fomenting political instability and to understand
the operation of contemporary political systems.  Countries explored in some
depth include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico.
Readings and assignments will vary according to whether the student is an
undergraduate or graduate student.
