American Urban Environments:
The city is a dominant fact of American life, despite
the negative pronouncements of a host of intellectuals. It
is also a fact that there are major environmental problems
connected to urban areas. This course will examine the
turbulent growth of American cities, their environmental
problems and the proposed, often ineffectual, solutions to
deal with them. The course will open with lectures on the
nature and history of American cities and follow with an
examination of environmental problems employing a thematic
approach: the city of dreadful night, the city of urgent
reform, the pastoral city, the city beautiful, the garden
city, the suburb city and the sustainable city of tomorrow.
