The goal of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the
philosophy, principles, and
practice of the management of theatre; not-for-profit, educational, and
commercial.
Objective are to provide students with:
an appreciation of theatre as a collaborative art within the context
of all of the arts.
an overview of American theatre producing systems and the management
problems
particular to each type: Broadway, off Broadway, off-off Broadway,
regional, stock, resident,
community, and educational.
an understanding of the philosophy and principles of management,
including
long-range strategic planning
organization
personnel development
program development
financial development
audience development/marketing
front of house operation (box office, house management, maintenance of
physical facility).
Primarily a service course for the Arts Administration program, T585
is one of three
courses from which all Arts Administration students must select two. The
course is taught
alternate years during the fall semester.
