Ordinarily, African history is taught with very little or no cartographic assistance. Therefore,
texts used are basic historical analyses, which often impart to students knowledge of Africa's past
and present within only socio-historical and political contexts. This course will be different and it
is expected to make an extensive utilization of maps in explaining to students the evolution of
African history from 1500 to the 1990s. As structured, the course will give its students
cartographic and histo-political understanding of Africa through the use of texts dealing with
significant African topics.
