C311 | 0976 | Nagle

Above section COAS intensive writing section and also
registration in COAS W333

In this course students will read, think about, discuss, and
write about
four epic poems from the classical Greek and Roman world.
You will read
large parts of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and all of
Apollonius'
Argonautica and Virgil's Aeneid. In general, the topic is
the changing
nature and role of the hero. Because you will be reading
English
translations of works originally composed in Greek and
Latin, some time
will be spent on issues related to the topic of
translation. Because
this course can be used to satisfy the "Intensive Writing
Requirement,"
some class time will be devoted to discussion of the writing
process.
Course grade will be based on papers and class
participation.
There will be no exams.
