This course will explore the position of women in the context of the family
in Korea.  Major topics will include Confucian ideology and the traditional
social order, the impact of colonialism, modernization, and
Christianity in the early 20th century, women and work, the participation
of women in contemporary social movements, and consumer culture and changes
in women's roles today.  Comparisons will be made with the
situations of women and family organization in Japan and China, as well as
with the place of women in North Korea and Korean-American communities.
