TOPIC: AMBIGUITY, AMBIVALENCE, AND IRONY IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
Though I have not yet made a final selection of texts, we will be
concerned with becoming more comfortable with the ways texts of the
eighteenth century often enacted disparate--sometimes
contradictory--meanings simultaneously. Students will be encouraged
to pursue and develop relevant individual research interests in the
period. Two papers will be required; the first brief (4-6 pages), the
second more substantial (8-12 pages).
