This course will examine short stories by James Baldwin, Toni Cade
Bambara, Saul Bellow, Raymond Carver, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner,
F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gail Godwin, Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale
Hurston, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Carol Oates, Flannery O'Connor,
Dorothy Parker, Katherine Anne Porter, Isaac Bashevis Singer, John
Steinbeck, John Updike, Eudora Welty, and others, as well as the
following novels (tentative list): Pietro di Donato, Christ in
Concrete; J. D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye; Ken
Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; Robert Coover, The
Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.; Kurt
Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse Five, or The Children's Crusade;
Leslie Marmon Silko, Ceremony; and Alice Walker, The Color
Purple.
Two analytical essays in addition to a midterm and final essay exam
will be required.
