COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION. REQUIRES THE PERMISSION OF ENGLISH
DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR OF HONORS. OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION FROM BH402.
SPECIAL TOPIC: MODERN/POSTMODERN
Using David Harvey's The Condition of Postmodernity as one of
our guides, we will explore the various meanings of the terms "modern"
and "postmodern" in novels, poetry, plays, films, and a number of
other forms of art and culture. Under the "modern" rubric, we will
read Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, poetry by Ezra Pound,
T. S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats, and others, and plays by Samuel
Beckett and Eugene O'Neill. Under the "postmodern" rubric, we will
read Paul Auster's City of Glass, poetry by Ed Dorn, the
so-called Language Poets, Cathy Bowman, and others, and plays by David
Mamet, Caryl Churchill, and others. Students will write a series of
one-page response papers and one longer, final paper (approximately 15
pages). You will also be expected to engage fully in class
discussions and to make occasional reports to the class.
