English | Community Service Writing
W240 | 8767 | Levasseur
W240 is especially geared toward the active learner and those
wishing to gain knowledge and experience of cultural diversity through
community service. The course requires students to volunteer at a
designated service agency and to combine meaningful work in the local
community with the development of critical writing, thinking, and
researching skills. Drawing on a variety of texts and genres, course
readings will focus on an array of American social issues. The
reading-writing component will involve analysis of texts, including
those provided by the service agency and materials that students
develop for the course. Students will keep a journal for social
reflection and problem appraisal. Other types of professional writing
will grow out of the service component.
