This course will survey the architecture and visual arts fro pre-
history through the end of the Gothic era around 1400.  The
artistic culture of the societies of the ancient Near East, the
Egyptian and Aegean civilizations, the Greeks and Romans will be
examined, as well as that of Medieval Western Europe and the
Byzantine Empire.  From this we will work to understand the
religions, politics, environment, economies and domestic issues
of each of these societies.
The course materials for this class will be a textbook and a
web page of visual resources.  Grades for the course will be
based on in-class and final exams, quizzes and in-class
exercises, a brief written assignment and class attendance.
