Fine Arts | African, New World & Oceanic Art
A150 | 2039 | Pelrine

Explore the mysteries of the colossal stone heads of Easter
Island, treasures of Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish,
and African objects designed to ensure success in all aspects of
life. This course introduces students to the traditional arts of
three very distinct regions: sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas
(pre-Columbian and Native American), and the islands of the South
Pacific. The course spans well over three thousand years, with
objects ranging from before 1500 B.C. to the present time. With
such obvious differences, why are these areas so often grouped
together? African, New World and Oceanic Art will also explore
this question by discussing the history of Western study of these
areas and by looking for common themes that draw the arts
together.
