Topic: American Architecture, Urbanism and Engineering

Architecture, as Leland Roth has observed, is an unavoidable art;
it surrounds us through-out our lives. Indeed, the entire built
environment can be seen as a vast stage set for society. While
most architectural history classes focus on "high" styles and
their architects, this class will also consider less typical
subjects. These could include broad patterns of American urban
growth, architectural materials, and engineered structures such
as transportation systems (including bridges), round barns, and
factories with a special emphasis on regional resources.
Students should expect a variety of activities including
lectures, class-time and weekend field trips, student
presentations, and group projects.
