Folklore | THE ART OF ETHNOGRAPHY
F740 | 2301 | Glassie
Meets with F540. Doing good fieldwork and writing good books are the keys
to success in folklore, and they will be the topics of this course. It will
overlap with the course I taught a couple of years ago on structuralism and
modernism in ethnography, so people who took that course would be unlikely
to want to take this one. In this course there will be two experimental
field projects and very much reading-not reading about methods, but reading
of entire books that exemplify dimensions of the tasks that are the main
tasks of the folklorist, though they are insufficiently developed in our
curriculum: how to get usable information out of reality, and how, then, to
compose books out of that information. It is my conviction that if you can
do good fieldwork and write good books about it, you can do anything a
folklorist needs to do.
