Folklore | PRACT.FOLK/ETHNO: Traditional Arts Indiana
F803 | 2308 | Carpenter

Meets with F403. In conjunction with the work of Traditional Arts Indiana,
students will identify and document the traditional arts and cultures of
Indiana. The practicum will include weekly
discussions of readings (about fieldwork and genres, in particular), time
for reflection, and opportunities to work collaboratively. It is intended
primarily as a chance to practice publicly oriented field research (project
planning, participant-observation and interviewing, transcription and
database entry, photography). Students will be able to choose from an array
of field sites (for example, Monroe/Owen counties, northwest Indiana, Ohio
River Valley, Ft. Wayne, Indianapolis). The final course materials will be
fully documented field collections and a 10-page paper reflecting on the
work and presenting ideas for ways in which the field data can be integrated
into public programs (museum exhibits, school programs, radio series, etc.).
