This course is an introduction to French literature and to careful study of
the texts.  The latter include Camus's brilliant récit,
L'Etranger; Cocteau's play, La Machine infernale; Dufau and
D'Alelio's Décuverte du poème; and a packet of some
fascinating short stories by Maupassant.  Written work will consist of one
midterm counting 20%, one composition and an explication de texte for 50%,
and the final exam carrying 30%.  All work will be done in French.
