The sound system of French has provided much interesting data for phonological
analysis in the second half of the 20th century.  In this course we will look
primarily at four major areas of debate:  nasal vowels, final consonants, mute
e's, and h aspiré. In tracing the history of these debates we will
investigate both linear (standard generative and natural generative) and
nonlinear approaches to French phonology as well as the growing literature
in the framework of Optimality Theory.  Students will read primary literature,
prepare oral and written class assignments, and sit for a final exam.
Prerequisite: LING L542 (or equivalent).
