Germanic Languages | Dutch Reading, Composition, and Conversation II
N404 | 2624 | Van der Cruysse-Van Antwerpen


Three credit hour course; meets 9:05-9:55 a.m., MWF in BH 664.

N404 will mainly concentrate on two topics: A) an introduction to colonial
history and colonial short stories: Indonesia, Caribbean and Afrikaans, thus
discussing the influence of The Netherlands and Belgium in the world.  B)
Dutch and Belgian films, series, an introduction to Dutch/Belgian popular
culture and identity.

Main assignments: Each student will be asked to work on a project for each of
these topics. A paper on each topic will reflect ideas exchanged during
presentations of topics in class. Smaller weekly assignments: 1-2 page essays
on related topics plus grammar exercises.

The skills focused on in the 4th semester are: perfection of grammar and
writing. The films will help your listening comprehension of the native
language spoken in a natural environment. Oral skills will be enhanced by
active participation in discussions and by presenting two main projects in
class and smaller ones throughout the semester.  Special time will be set
aside to incorporate special interests of students in the class.
