This course will engage beginning graduate students in a critical
examination of the relationship between language and society in the
Spanish-speaking world.  We will survey the major areas of
sociolinguistics including linguistic variation (age, social class,
geography) language contact (diglossia, code-switching, borrowing),
the sociology of language and, language and gender. Students will be
required to work on a project.
