This course surveys a wide variety of social, economic, political and
cultural factors that effect the environment within which ordinary Latin
Americans struggle to live their lives at the beginning of the twenty first
century. Using an array of texts and documents and adopting an
interdisciplinary perspective the course will introduce the student to a
broad spectrum of themes ranging from the legacy of military regimes in the
Southern Cone countries to the emergence of movements of social and
political contestation in contemporary Mexico, from the environmental
disaster of the rainforest in Brazil to the impact of sport and television
soap opera. Materials used include film, drama and memoirs.
