CLASS MEETING:
One fifty minute period two time per week
ATTENDANCE:
Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences. Upon a fourth absence
the students has
three (3) options:
1. receive a grade of F;
2. officially withdraw from the course;
3. follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective
Program Coordinator.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Advanced techniques in modern dance with emphasis on the performance of
movement patterns,
dance repertory, and/or individual creative work.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the course, each student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of how the body moves through the
application of movement
principles as they relate to the techniques learned in class;
2. Assess his/her own technical strengths and limitations;
3. Describe and perform designated motion efforts (weight, space, time,
flow)
4. Demonstrate an understanding of selected Laban movement concepts through
the application
of these concepts in performance and/or written analysis.
COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE:
1. Laban Movement Analysis Concepts
2. Body Terms-position, shapes, actions, divisions, relationships
3. Relationships of terms-division of trunk (upper/lower; right/left;
front/back), center of weight,
base of support
4. Space terms-vertical, sagittal, horizontal dimensions and planes
5. Effort terms-flow, weight, time, space
6. Movement combinations as they apply to #1-6
7. Dance history-third generation modern dance pioneers
8. Dance films/videos
TEXTBOOK:

EXAMS:
Three - four performance exams
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Chapter/Article summary
2. Technical self-assessment/summary papers
3. At least one concert critique
4. Written analysis of a movement combination of your choice.
GRADING:
1. Three performance exams at 25 pts. = 75
points
2. Technique analysis/summary papers at 5 pts. = 10
points
3. Chapter/Article summary = 10
points
4. Combination analysis
= 15 points
5. Concert critique
= 10 points
TOTAL COURSE POINTS = 120
