E270 Introduction to Scuba, and good health (E270 and E370 may be taken
during the same
semester)

CLASS MEETING:
Meets one 60 minute Lecture and one 2 hour Lab per week.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
National scuba certification program for recreational divers.  Program
includes lecture and pool
sessions to enable students to participate in the open water qualification
dives.

OBJECTIVES:
Develop knowledge of equipment, environments, communication, and related
theory of diving, as
applied to the open water diving experience.  Obtain fundamental skills
necessary for safe and
enjoyable scuba diving prior to the open water diving experience.  Provide
open water experience
in a controlled manner, as required for national scuba certification, or
provide student
referral.

TEXT:
PADI Open Water Diver Kit (Manual, workbook, logbook)

CLASS PROCEDURE:
Students will meet during the regular scheduled lecture time.  Additionally,
students will arrange
lecture and pool sessions for completion of the required sessions.  These
arranged sessions will be
limited to 12 students and provide for a better instructor to student ratio.
Arranged times will be
announced by the instructor, based on three options indicated by the
student.  Students must
complete all required lecture and pool sessions, pass the written exam, and
satisfactorily complete
the pool evaluation.   Prior to instructor referral for open water dive.

GRADING POLICY:
S/F grade based on lecture and pool attendance and exams.

ATTENDANCE:
Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences.  Upon a fourth absence
the student has
three (3) options:
1.  receive a grade of F;
2.  officially withdraw from the course;
3.  follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective
Program Coordinator.

SPECIAL FEES:
E370 lab fee of $50 must be paid to the Bursar's Office, and receipt shown
to the instructor prior
to the first pool session.

EQUIPMENT:
IU will provide equipment for the pool sessions, however, student must
provide personal snorkel
equipment for open water qualification dives. Additionally, student must
arrange for buoyancy
compensator (BCD), and exposure protection (wetsuit & weights), for the open
water experience.
