Dynamics of Recreational Sports Environment

Description:  This course will study the interaction of the participant in
the recreational sports environment from a psychological and sociology
perspective to include:  individual's self- and physical-awareness, life
stages, self-concept, self-esteem, focus of control, social facilitation,
perceptions of others, overall benefits of sport.  The course will also view
sport from an international and societal perspective in terms of changing
trends and issues, the role of competition, impact on youth and adult
development, violence and deviance, gender, race/ethnicity, class, the
economy, and national image.  Content will include media analysis, case
studies, and research into issues and concerns about human behavior in the
recreational sports environment.

Course Objectives:
1)  To acquaint the student with the participant characteristics of various
age categories as it relates to the behavioral sciences
2)  To acquaint the student with participant behavior in recreational sports
within various age categories as it relates to management methods and
techniques for control
3)  To develop and understand the varying behavioral patterns within the
recreational sport environment
4)  To acquaint the student with participant, coach, parent, and spectator
behavior in recreational sport within various categories as it relates to
management methods and techniques for control
5)  To develop an understanding of specific techniques and methods employed
to enhance positive participant development within the recreational sports
environment
6)  To develop an understanding of various global concerns about the role of
sport in society
7)  To understand the role of recreational sport in selected countries
8)  To observe and analyze case studies on various issues and concerns
surrounding human behavior in the recreational sports environment
9)  To develop understanding of current theoretical and empirical research
in the behavior sciences as it relates to the recreational sports and
environment
10)  To understand the roles that gender, race, age and other demographic
characteristics play on the recreational sport environment
