This colloquium will examine the published literature on the history of
the mass media in Europe - West, Central and East, including Russia. A
modest core of common readings will consist primarily of journal articles.
Examples of topics for discussion will include the impact of the
development of printing, newspapers and the French Revolution, the
development of 19th century mass circulation newspapers, propaganda,
regulation, the advent of broadcasting, etc. Students will regularly read
and present discussions of books related to the various themes. These
will be assigned to some extent according to student research interests.
Writing will include book essays and an integrated examination of one of
the course topics. Students in the research track will be happiest here.
