This course is an introduction to theoretical syntax for graduate students who have had
no previous exposure to recent syntactic theory. It is designed to familiarize students
with the basic goals and concepts of the Principles-and-Parameters approach to formal
syntax, and to provide training in both syntactic argumentation and the analysis of data
from English and other languages. Major areas of inquiry include: phrase structure,
argument structure, Case marking, anaphoric relations, movement, bounding
phenomena, and empty categories. The class will proceed with a mix of lecture,
discussion, and frequent exercises.
