K300 | 3057 | Voakes

This course will deal with statistical and mathematical techniques that are
relevant to journalism. The topics in statistics will include probability,
the normal distribution, hypothesis-testing, and polls, surveys and sampling
methods. We will also cover descriptive statistics, with a focus on the
graphical presentation of data. Mathematical topics will include rates of
change and mathematical modeling, as well as a review of the more basic
procedures commonly encountered in reporting. The course will include
written assignments involving the interpretation and explanation of data and
data analysis. Computer laboratory work will be included, providing
experience with Excel to work with large sets of data. Prerequisite: M118
