Course Meets: 1:00 -2:15 MW     KH 200

This course will introduce students to medieval Islamic history and culture, with a special emphasis on
the historical role of the Muslim religion.  The origins, early and medieval periods of Islamic civilization
will be surveyed from A.D. 600 to 1500.  Topics will include pre-Islamic Arabia, the life and times of
Muhammad, the Quran and the basic teachings of Islam, the Arab conquests and the caliphate, the
successor states, and major aspects of Islamic culture, such as law, sects, theology, philosophy,
literature, art and the relationship between state and religion.

Readings will consists of textbooks and Islamic texts in translation.
Satisfies COAS SHHS and CSA requirements.
Meets intensive writings requirement.  Requires registration in W333 (8766).
