This course aims at developing accuracy and fluency in reading and translating classical Arabic texts.
Class time will be devoted primarily to reading and translating selected passages from the Qur'an and
the corresponding passages from major Qur'anic commentaries, such as al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir and al-
Zamakhshari. In addition, students will be asked to prepare mid-term (4-5 page) and final (8-10 page)
translation projects. For graduate students, additional class assignments will acquaint students with the
major research tools and reference works associated with Qur'anic studies.

Prerequisite: Reading knowledge of standard Arabic.
