This course gives students the opportunity to learn a practical skill in one area of optometry or opticianry. Students enjoy hands-on instruction involving work with spectacles. The course begins with placing eyeglass lenses into frames. The student then learns to adjust different types of frames and gains experience by practicing on both model heads and other students in the lab. Additional topics covered in the course include frame and facial measurements, eyeglass prescription ordering, eye wear repair, and types of frame and lens materials needed for specific purposes.
There are two 50-minute lectures, a discussion, and two 2-hour labs per week. Attendance is mandatory in lecture and in the laboratory. Lecture material is tested with two midterms and a final exam. Four laboratory practical exams are given during the course of the semester to test mastery of practical skills. No prerequisites or previous experience required.
