Psychology | Psychology: The Interdisciplinary Science
P457 | 3522 | J. Steinmetz

Scientific psychology is major discipline with several areas of
research specialization. The discipline tends to subdivide itself along
content area dimensions such as social psychology, developmental
psychology, cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, animal learning and
behavior, and behavioral neuroscience. However, more recent trends in the
discipline tend to stress the interdisciplinary nature of the science as
more and more scientific psychologists study problems at the intersection
of traditional subfields. This advanced seminar will study this recent
trend. After summarizing the newest research developments in a variety of
subfields of psychology, the seminar will focus on how advances in one
subfield has impacted other subfields and also explore the latest
interdisciplinary areas of psychology that are emerging (areas such as
health psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, cognitive
neuroscience and cross-cultural psychology). The emphasis in the class
will be on critical discussion (and not lectures) of examples of primary
research literature from scientific psychology. Grading will be based on
participation in the discussions, class presentations and one term paper.
