This course has three major aims. The first is to describe and
attempt to understand the broad contours of political life in a
number of European countries. The second is to provide opportunities
to think, speak, and write logically and persuasively about important
political problems. The third is to draw out comparative lessons in
terms of party orientations, the potential challenge of new parties
and pressure groups, and futures for European "welfare states." We
also will spend some time looking at the issue of immigration.

Written assignments will include a short answer midterm examination,
an essay final examination, a choice between two short or one longer
paper, and a group project. I would be pleased to discuss any aspect
of the course. My office number is 5-9100, email furniss@indiana.edu.
