This course is an introduction to the politics of contemporary
Britain. The goal of the course is for students to develop a
foundation of basic facts concerning British politics, an awareness
and appreciation of ongoing political issues and conflict in the
United Kingdom, and an increased understanding of British political
institutions and processes. The course emphasizes comparisons
between Britain and other political systems, particularly that of the
United States. Of special interest this semester will be the new
directions of British politics under Tony Blair, constitutional
reform, and the Northern Ireland conflict. Grades are based on
exams, in-class exercises and writing assignments.
