Study of the integration of the economics of the member states of the
European Union (EU) since the Treaty of Rome. Economic policymaking
institutions and the EU budget. Economic theory of a customs union
and a single market. Imperfections in the single market, including
imperfect competition and unemployment. Monetary integration and
monetary union. Common policy and reforms. Widening of the EU to the
east and south. Emphasis on relevant current events, with which
students are expected to be familiar--for instance by reading The
Financial Times, available in the WEUR library.
