This colloquium will examine the published literature on the history
of the mass media in Europe--West, Central and East. A modest core
of common readings will consist primarily of journal articles.
Examples of topics for discussion will include the impact of the
development of printing, newspapers and the French Revolution, the
development of 19th century mass circulation newspapers, propaganda,
regulation, the advent of broadcasting, etc. Students will regularly
read and present discussions of books related to the various themes.
These will be assigned to some extent according to student research
interests. Writing will include book essays, and an integrated
examination of one of the course topics.
