Classical Studies | The Golden Age of Athens
C351 | 0961 | Martha Vinson
C351/0961 The Golden Age of Athens (3cr.) meets Tuesday and Thursday
from 11:15A-12:30P in SY 137.
This course combines a survey of fifth century Athenian art and
literature with intensive writing. After a brief historical overview,
we will begin with the trial of Socrates in 399 and work our way
backwards as we explore various facets of Golden Age culture. When we
have come full circle, we will conclude the semester with a discussion
of current intellectual concerns such as periodization, that is,
whether it is valid aor even useful to speak of a Golden Age at all.
Regular class attendance and participation are required. Students are
expected to read the assigned texts and be prepared to discuss them on
the days on which they are assigned, bringing copies to class. The
final grade will be determined on the basis of quizzes (20%) and four
papers of approximately five pages each (80%). One of these papers
must be revised in light of the instructor's comments and resubmitted
along with the original version. Papers will be due on February 1,
February 22, March 21, April 11, and April 27. Late papers will be
accepted only in the event of a serious and verifiable emergency.
