C409/0963 Roman Literature and Art : ROMANO-CAMPANIAN PAINTING
(3 cr.) meets Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00P-2:15P in BH 217.

The course will survey the history of mural painting in Rome and
Campania with attention to its semantic significance and its social
context. Topics covered will include: painting and spatial dynamics;
the "Four Pompeian Styles"; mythological painting with its literary
and artistic background; landscapes and other topical genres; the
usefulness of literary evidence for painting; mosaics; post-Pompeian
painting; the history of excavation; the afterlife of Roman and
Pompeian painting. As a basis for written descriptive and interpretive
exercises, students will have access to many of the instructor's
personal slides on the WWW. Students taking the course for graduate
credit should expect to do much of their research reading in French;
German or Italian. Assignments will be distributed with attention to
language strength.

Graded work will include:

Undergraduate: several written "viewing exercises"; 1 short paper;
final essay exam based on slides.

Graduate: "viewing exercises"; class report based on a scholarly
article; research paper; final slide essay exam.
