Prof. Hawkins

If you enjoy sitting in cafes and talking about movies, books and ideas,
this is the class for you. During the semester we'll be looking at some of
the major French films of the past 20 years, paying special attention to
what the French call the "cinéma du look" (Diva, La Femme Nikita,
Delicatessen and Subway),the ever-popular "polars" or police dramas, and
experimental/art cinema. In between we'll be watching films that highlight
current French concerns about race, immigration, gender, sexuality and
AIDS, as well as contemporary French anxiety about the nation's World War
II history and colonial past. Readings and discussions will be in English.
Films will be subtitled.

Written work will include a viewing/reading journal, a midterm and a final
exam.
Students taking the class for intensive writing credit will be asked to
write substantially more.
