This course will lay a foundation of skills and knowledge which will
help students to understand the various styles, practices and contexts
in which contemporary popular culture can be analyzed and understood.
It will enable students to relate the consumption of popular texts to
theories of audience reception, and to have a basic understanding of
the ways in which generic conventions function in popular culture. The
course will also enable students to explore the way popular culture
functions in the construction of subjectivities, through reference to
such examples as cartoons, graphic novels, movies, popular fiction,
pop art, television shows and tabloid newspapers.
