While Edgar Allen Poe is perhaps most famous today for his "tales of
terror," he is also widely credited with the origin and development of
the modern detective story. This course will examine the relationship
between horror and detective fiction and film, from Poe to _The Blair
Witch Project_, including works by Arthur Conan Doyle, Jorge Luis
Borges, and Stephen King, and horror films both classic and
contemporary. We will also read some critical and theoretical
approaches to the works, in order to more fully understand their
popularity and relevance to the cultures that produce them.
