This course investigates issues of history and ethnography in Chinese
cinema from both critical and historical perspectives. We will cover
three geopolitical regions in Chinese film production--Mainland China,
Hong Kong, and Taiwan and concentrate mostly on the 1980s-1990s.
Weekly topics include cultural reflections, rewriting the
revolutionary history, primitive passions, landscape and transnational
desire, memory of the Cultural Revolution, suffering women, nostalgia
and narcissism, ethnic dishes, and the view from the periphery.
