This course will introduce students to various orientations and
strategies for analyzing the relationship between literature and the
cinema. Areas of study will include novels that have been filmed and
films that have been novelized;
the relationship between literary source and various cinematic
adaptations; what makes a successful and unsuccessful adaptation;
audience reception; markets and distribution; the role of the director
and screenwriter. The course will also introduce students to analysis
of the style and discourses of cinematic narratives, and the complex
relationship between literature, cinema, celebrity and consumption.
